  2. Use it after meals and snacks
    The best time for xylitol gum or mints is right after eating — when bacteria are most active and saliva stimulation matters most.
  3. Check the label
    Xylitol should be the first or primary sweetener listed. Products that contain xylitol as a secondary ingredient (after sorbitol or other sweeteners) may not deliver meaningful amounts.
  4. Don’t skip fluoride toothpaste
    Xylitol works alongside fluoride, not instead of it. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste — xylitol products work in between.
  5. Think of it as a between-meal tool

Patients with specific cardiovascular concerns should discuss any questions with their physician, but there is no current evidence-based reason to stop using xylitol toothpaste or moderate amounts of dental gum.

⚠ Critical: Xylitol Is Toxic to Dogs

Even small amounts of xylitol can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar, seizures, liver failure, and death in dogs. Keep all xylitol-containing products — sugar-free gum, mints, peanut butter, baked goods, and toothpaste — completely out of reach. If your dog ingests xylitol, contact a veterinarian or animal poison control immediately.
